Partners Capital

Investment Overview
In December 2005 and June 2006, the partners and connections of SHP acquired a significant minority interest in Partners Capital. SHP’s principals assisted in the identification and execution of the investment, and SHP plays an active role in assisting the management with the strategic development of the Company. Jeremy Sillem is a member of the Advisory Board of Partners Capital.

Partners Capital
Partners Capital is a leading international outsourced investment office based in London and Boston, with additional offices in New York, San Francisco, Paris, Singapore and Hong Kong, serving investment professionals, endowments, foundations and high net-worth families globally by providing wholly independent advice on asset allocation and access to what it believes to be best-of-breed asset managers across all asset classes and geographic markets. This access is strongly enhanced by the quality of the Company's community of shareholders and clients, most of whom are veteran investors themselves in specialist sectors around the world.

The firm was founded in 2001 by investment professionals seeking an independent and conflict free adviser to provide portfolio construction advice and rigorous analysis of investment opportunities. From its initial focus as the "money managers to the money managers" with a base of 70 clients, Partners Capital has grown to become an adviser to endowments and foundations as well as prominent family offices and successful entrepreneurs across the US, UK, Europe and Asia. Endowments have become a large proportion of the institutional client base which numerous Oxford and Cambridge Colleges and many of the most highly respected museums and charitable foundations. As at December 2020, the firm advised on over $30bn of assets.


Investment Overview
In 2005 and 2006, RIT Capital Partners plc acquired a substantial minority holding in Harbourmaster. SHP’s principals advised RIT Capital Partners on its investment in the Company and Jeremy Sillem was a Director of Harbourmaster up until its US$232m sale to The Blackstone Group, which completed in January 2012.

Over the 7-year period, RIT Capital Partners generated a total return from its investment in Harbourmaster of £72 million (equivalent to 5x its original investment). This represented one of the most profitable private equity investments which RIT Capital Partners has made.

In addition to representing the interests of RIT Capital Partners, SHP played an active role in advising the management on the strategic development of the Company, including on its sale to The Blackstone Group.

Harbourmaster Capital
Established in March 2000, Harbourmaster Capital (now part of Blackstone) became one of Europe's leading investment advisors of secured bank loans. The firm was dedicated to deep, fundamental, long term analysis of sub-investment grade corporates and investment grade infrastructure projects. Harbourmaster Capital advised clients in respect of approximately €8bn of senior secured loans and infrastructure debt at the time of its sale to The Blackstone Group.

Martin Currie

Investment Overview
In September 2007, an investor group including Crestview Partners, RIT Capital Partners plc and interests of Lord Rothschild, acquired a 24.9% interest in Martin Currie.

SHP advised the investors on the minority investment in Martin Currie, and Jeremy Sillem was appointed to the board as a non-executive director up until its sale to Legg Mason in 2014. SHP also advised RIT Capital Partners plc and interests of Lord Rothschild on certain follow-on equity investments made into Martin Currie in 2009 and 2012.

In addition to representing the interests of RIT Capital Partners plc and the interests of Lord Rothschild on the Board of Martin Currie, SHP advised the Company on its acquisition of the European hedge fund business of Sofaer Capital in 2010 and other strategic initiatives.

In October 2014, Legg Mason announced the acquisition of Martin Currie. SHP advised Crestview Partners, RIT Capital Partners plc and the interests of Lord Rothschild on the transaction.

Martin Currie
Martin Currie (now part of Franklin Templeton, following its acquisition of Legg Mason) is a specialist equities fund management business based in Edinburgh, with offices in London, New York, Singapore and Melbourne and manages a series of funds across various long-only and long/short active equity strategies. In 2014, when Legg Mason acquired Martin Currie, the Company advised on approximately $10bn of AUM.
